What changed from v24 → v25 (only the background “engine”):
- Replaced the giant `body.publications-directory::before` multi-layer list with two GPU-stable overlays:
- `::before` = one shaft + stamped clones (fluting included)
- `::after` = cap + upper plinth + stamped clones
- Kept the cornice, steps, lower plinths, and parchment on `body` as before.
- Added derived positioning vars (`--plinthEdge`, `--leftOuterX`, etc.) to avoid long fractional calc chains.
If the banding persists after this swap, the next fix is a one-line hard toggle: `filter: none;` on the stamping blocks (to fall back to single-column ornaments), but in practice this v25 structure is the usual cure for the full-screen vertical stripe glitch you photographed.

### What happened (in plain terms)
I tried to “stamp” one column into four columns using `filter: drop-shadow(...)`. That does **not** duplicate the texture. It duplicates the **silhouette**, and because the silhouette is being treated as a dark shape, you get those **near-black shafts** you’re seeing. That’s why the screenshot looks like a ruined temple.
So: we reset.

## What you are actually looking for (the target)
When this is correct, the Publications page should look like:
1) **Two column pairs**: one pair left, one pair right
2) Each pair has **two fluted shafts** (soft stone, not dark)
3) **Caps** touch the bottom of a **top cornice**
4) **Lower plinths** sit on the **step plane** (bottom)
5) The content sits in the **clear middle field**, readable, with the architecture framing it—never dominating it.
That’s the “reality check” spec.

## The practical way forward
If your current v24 is producing GPU banding / glitch artifacts, the fix is **not** clever stamping. The fix is:
- keep the architecture as **ordinary multiple backgrounds**
- reduce the number of layers
- eliminate long fractional calc chains
- put the heavy paint on a **single fixed pseudo-element** (`::before`) so the browser composites it once.

- Do you still see **random vertical bands across the whole screen** (not the intentional fluting on the columns)?
If yes, then it’s not our layer math—it’s the GPU compositor on that Windows machine, and the next move is a single switch:
- force software paint just for that page (one CSS toggle), or
- replace the architecture with an inline SVG background (most stable of all).
But first: get the columns back into the world where columns belong.

It seems the columns could be positioned in their pairs further to the outside, closer to the edges of the window. The text needs to be centered between the columns, and the columns need to be sitting on the top plinths, each pair of columns respectively, and they also need to be resting, need to be contacting the lower side of the, what we've been calling the, well, that top structure, which by the way I have been meaning to mention that that top, oh, what have we been calling it, is now showing vertical striations. Those striations should be horizontal, indicating the direction of the grain, so to speak, of that top structure, or whatever we've been calling it.

When I back out, when I when I alter or replace the CSS file, I do the double commit, the first commit button, the second commit button, but before I leave that level, I do a hard refresh there, and then I back up one level up to assets. I do a hard refresh there, and then I go to the next level up is rodzacky.github.io. I don't do a refresh there yet. I go into publications, HTML, change the version number, commit, commit again, hard refresh, and then I back out to rodzacky.github.io, hard refresh there, and then because I have the live site tab available from the previous visit, I X that tab, I close that tab, I re-enter via the search bar in the HTTPS, I enter at the home page, I do a hard refresh there, I go to publications. If it's not showing what I am expecting, I do a source inquiry. If the source number doesn't match the latest version number that I am expecting, I then go back into the the publications main page, publications home page if you will, and do my final hard refresh there, and that usually brings up the the final product. Anyway, I'm doing hard refreshes throughout in ascending order as I'm backing out of, for instance, the CSS file. Each step up, I do a hard refresh, so I've got that pretty well figured out. It's working pretty well for me.
