Commit, then do a **hard refresh** on `/publications/`.
This will force the browser to pull the updated CSS for the Publications chamber while leaving the rest of the site untouched.
When you’re ready to continue visual refinement (or apply this site-wide later), we’ll bump the version number together.

The difference in the sizes of the inner and outer columns, I think they should be equally equal in width. Also the appearance of the inner column doesn't match that of the outer column. Also the inner column top extends above the bottom of the, what we call the cornice. Also the overlap of the cornice beyond the outer sides of the inner columns. Also the extension of the bottoms of the, all of the columns below the level of the top step. Also the lack of a plinth at the bottom of each column. I will leave it at that for now. ## Why the discrepancies are happening (mechanically)
1) **Outer columns vs inner columns are built two different ways**
- Outer columns = `body::before` and `body::after` (fixed overlays, one texture)
- Inner columns = `body` **background-image layers** (different texture logic)
That’s why the inner/outer **don’t match** in appearance and why they’re harder to align precisely.
2) **Widths are unequal by design right now**
- Outer width is hard-set to `170px`
- Inner width is hard-set to `135px`
So yes: they will never look equal until we unify the widths.
3) **Inner tops and cornice underside don’t “meet” cleanly**
The inner columns are positioned with `background-position: … 70px` and sized with `calc(100vh - 70px)` while the cornice is a separate fixed overlay with its own height. Those two systems don’t share a single “cornice bottom” reference, so misalignment is expected.
4) **Cornice overhang**
The cornice currently spans the full viewport width (`left: 0; right: 0;`). If you want it to appear to sit *on* the columns (and not float past them), it needs to be visually constrained to the interior span or designed with intentional end-blocks.
5) **Columns extending below the top step**
Your steps are a fixed overlay at the bottom, but the columns run `top:0; bottom:0;`. So columns will always “pass through” the step zone unless we explicitly stop them at the step height.
6) **No plinths/bases per column**
Right now the step zone is global; there are no per-column base blocks/caps being drawn.
## The key constraint
We are out of “free” pseudo-elements:
- `body::before/after` = outer columns
- `main::before/after` = cornice + steps
That leaves no clean way to add **inner columns + plinths + capitals** in a precise, architectural way using only the current structure.
## Next logical move (minimal, controlled)
Add **one wrapper** inside `/publications/index.html` so we gain two more pseudo-elements (for the inner columns), and we can draw plinths/caps cleanly.
Example conceptually (not code yet):
- Wrap all Publications content in a single container (e.g., `.portal`)
- Then we can use:
- `body::before/after` → outer columns
- `.portal::before/after` → inner columns
- `main::before/after` → cornice + steps
- and plinth/cap details can be layered onto the column elements themselves (so they don’t drift)
This directly fixes:
- equal widths
- matching texture
- correct meeting points under the cornice
- columns stopping at the top step
- real plinths/capitals
If you accept that one-wrapper change, the first action step will be: **insert one div wrapper around the Publications page content** (Publications page only).

What’s happening (in plain terms):
1) **Cornice not “sitting” on inner columns**
That’s a positioning/offset mismatch: the cornice’s bottom edge is not aligned to the same `top` line where the inner columns end.
2) **Cornice extends past the inner columns**
That’s simply the cornice width (or left/right inset) being wider than the inner-column pair. If the cornice is meant to visually rest on the inner columns, its left/right edges must match the inner columns’ outer edges.
3) **Outer columns not reaching the top**
Their `top`/`height` (or `bottom`) is set so they start lower or end lower than the cornice line. They need to share the same vertical span as the architectural frame (top of viewport down to the step line).
If you want the simplest “correct” look under Option B:
- **Outer columns** should run from the **top of the page down to the step line**.
- **Inner columns** should run from the **step line up to the underside of the cornice**.
- **Cornice** should span **exactly the full width from outer-left to outer-right**, and its underside should align with the tops of the columns it sits on (in your current concept: both inner+outer should meet it cleanly).
If you say **“ready”**, the next step will be: **one small CSS edit** that forces a shared “roofline” (same `top` reference) and sets the cornice `left/right` to match the column grid so nothing overhangs.
